β–Œ BACKGROUND
Aviax Taxing Corporation occupied 39 floors of automated tax processing.
On November 17, 1988, CEO Harlan Colsten was murdered.
The killer: an entity known only as THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE.
His final words: "… It was you."
β–Œ THE REPLICA
COO Dr. Victor Kline ordered a full digital replica of the building β€” with Harlan's ghost code deliberately left intact.
"Leadership must persist."
The Ghost In The Machine was digitized as punishment. It brought Harlan with it.
Both are now trapped inside.
β–Œ YOU
You are Darron. A maintenance worker. Hired one month before the incident.
You are a test subject. You were never meant to leave.

INTRODUCTION & SAFETY
1
Introduction

This manual covers the operation, routine maintenance, and emergency procedures for the Aviax Model 39-B Vertical Transport System as installed in Aviax Taxing Corporation headquarters, floors 1 through 39. All maintenance personnel are required to read this manual in full before performing any work on the system.

The Model 39-B represents the fourth generation of Aviax's proprietary vertical transport architecture, designed specifically for the 39-floor configuration of this building. The system operates on a dual-cable traction drive with redundant braking and an automated floor-leveling mechanism calibrated to within 3mm.

⚠ SAFETY NOTICE β€” READ BEFORE PROCEEDING
All maintenance must be performed by certified personnel only. Disconnect main power (MAIN PWR switch, basement panel B-7) before servicing any electrical component. Never enter the elevator shaft without a secondary operative present. Do not, under any circumstances, manually operate the Floor 39 doors without written authorization from senior management.
"The 39-B is a reliable system when properly maintained. Neglect the wiring harness and she'll remind you." β€” Chief Engineer R. Moss, 1981

SECTION 1 Β· SYSTEM OVERVIEW
2
System Overview
DRIVE SYSTEM

The 39-B uses a dual-sheave traction drive located in the machine room on Floor 39. Two 22mm steel cables support the car and counterweight. Motor: 3-phase AC, 45kW, 480V.

CONTROL SYSTEM

Relay-logic controller, 1974 design, updated 1982. Three control circuits: MAIN PWR (120V), AUX CIRCUIT (96V), and DOOR CONTROL (24V).

SAFETY SYSTEMS

Progressive safety gear, overspeed governor, pit buffer springs, door reversal sensors. Weekly governor test required.

CAPACITY

Rated load: 1,360kg (3,000 lbs). Maximum occupancy: 18 persons. Do not exceed rated load under any circumstances.

SECTION 2 Β· ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
8
2.2 β€” Wiring Harness Repair

The wiring harness connects the car control panel to the relay controller via three conductors. These must be inspected monthly and replaced if insulation damage is found. Incorrect wiring will prevent elevator operation and may cause controller damage.

⚠ CRITICAL β€” CONDUCTOR ORDER
Conductors must be connected to the correct terminals. Incorrect connections will blow the 15A fuse on relay board R-3 and may cause motor reversal. Always verify with a continuity tester before restoring power.
CONDUCTOR COLOUR VOLTAGE TERMINAL FUNCTION
L1 RED 120V AC T-RED Main Live Feed
N WHITE 0V T-WHT Neutral Return
GND BLACK 0V T-BLK Safety Ground
HARNESS ROUTING Β· EMERGENCY REPAIR PANEL SOURCE SIDE SOCKET SIDE (CAR PANEL) (RELAY BOARD) ● RED ───────────────────→ ● T-RED ● WHITE ───────────────────→ ● T-WHT ● BLACK ───────────────────→ ● T-BLK NOTE: In fault condition, terminal labels may be obscured. Use colour-matching only.
If the elevator will not respond after wiring repair, confirm MAIN PWR and AUX CIRCUIT switches are both in the ON (UP) position before calling for engineering support.

After completing wiring repair, restore both power switches before testing. The system requires both MAIN PWR (120V) and AUX CIRCUIT (96V) to be active simultaneously β€” neither alone is sufficient to energize the motor controller.

Appendix C
Floor 39 β€” Special Operating Procedures

This section has been classified at the direction of Dr. Victor Kline, COO, effective November 18, 1988. Access requires written authorization on Form AV-39C submitted to building security a minimum of 48 hours in advance.

The Floor 39 elevator lobby operates under non-standard containment parameters established following the November 17th incident. Maintenance personnel are reminded that standard door operation procedures do not apply to this floor.

DO NOT OPEN THE DOORS ON FLOOR 39
Under no circumstances should the Floor 39 elevator doors be manually operated, bypassed, or held open. Protocol AV-39C-EMERGENCY supersedes all standard operating procedures for this floor. If the doors open without authorization, immediately evacuate the floor and contact DR. V. KLINE DIRECTLY Β· DO NOT USE INTERNAL PHONE LINE 39
C.3 β€” Entity Behavior Parameters

The entity designated GHOST IN THE MACHINE exhibits the following behavioral patterns when in proximity to the Floor 39 exit: accelerated movement, auditory mimicry of known personnel, and in some documented cases direct visual manifestation as the late H. Colsten. Do not engage. Do not respond to voice contact. Do not make eye contact with any manifestation on this floor.

Remainder of Appendix C β€” 14 pages β€” sealed per AV-EXEC order 88-11-18. Contact Dr. V. Kline.
